Regularly checking your engine oil is one of those basic car tasks that most people skip — but it’s dead simple and can save you from some serious (and expensive) engine trouble later.
Here’s a quick step-by-step guide to check and top up your oil in under 10 minutes.
What You’ll Need:
- A clean paper towel or rag
- Engine oil (check your owner’s manual for the correct type)
- A funnel (makes life easier, but not required)
1. Park on Level Ground and Let the Engine Cool
Make sure your car is parked on a flat surface and turned off. If you’ve just been driving, let it sit for 5–10 minutes so the oil settles.

2. Find the Dipstick
Pop the hood and look for the dipstick — usually has a yellow or orange ring handle. Pull it out, wipe it clean with your rag, and slide it back in fully.
Now pull it out again and check the level.

3. Read the Oil Level
At the tip of the dipstick, you’ll see two lines or notches: one for minimum, one for maximum.
- If the oil level is between the two → you’re good
- If it’s below the minimum line → you need to add some oil
Also check the color:
- Amber or golden? Still in good shape
- Black and gritty? It’s probably time for an oil change

4. Add Oil (If You Need To)
If you’re low on oil:
- Unscrew the oil filler cap (should say “OIL” or have the oil can icon)
- Slowly pour in a small amount of oil (about 1/4 quart to start)
- Wait a few minutes, check the dipstick again
- Repeat if needed — but don’t overfill
Too much oil can cause just as many problems as not enough.

5. Wrap It Up
Once your oil level is in the safe zone:
- Push the dipstick back in
- Tighten the oil cap
- Close your hood
- Done ✅

How Often Should You Check?
Once a month is a good rule of thumb. Check it more often if you’ve got an older car or you notice oil stains under your vehicle.
Also smart to check it before long trips.
Final Tip:
Keep a quart of your car’s oil in the trunk. You never know when it’ll come in handy.
